DRUGS CONTRAINDICATED FOR PARKINSON'S DISEASE PATIENTS

The term "contraindicated" essentially means that the drug in question should not be given to a Parkinsonian. In Parkinson's disease, the basic problem is the chemical nature of the disease itself. Many drugs alter the brain's dopamine system and may not be recognized as having a potential detrimental effect on Parkinson's disease simply because the drugs are employed for the treatment of other conditions. All patients with Parkinson's disease should have a list of these drugs available for their physician's reference and for emergency situations.

This list was compiled by Paul A. Nausieda, MD, Director of the APDA Information & Referral Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 1800-972-5455. The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. is making this list available in an effort to reduce problems that may be caused by these drugs in patients with Parkinson's disease.
